Who Is Justin Trudeau?

Justin Pierre James Trudeau, born in Ottawa on December 25, 1971, is a Canadian politician and the leader of the Liberal Party since 2013. Justin Trudeau is Canada’s current and 23rd prime minister and the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history.

Justin Trudeau, the eldest son of Pierre Elliott and Margaret Sinclair Trudeau, has two younger brothers, Alexandre and Michel. Justin and Alexandre, born in 1973, share the same date of birth, two years apart. Trudeau’s youngest brother Michel was born in 1975 but tragically died on a skiing trip in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park during an avalanche.

Trudeau is of French, Canadian, and Scottish descent. Justin can trace his French heritage to Robert Trudeau, who lived in France in the mid-16th century, and to Étienne Trudeau, who arrived in Canada in 1659.

Trudeau earned his Bachelor’s in Art in 1994 at McGill University and a bachelor’s degree in the Education program from the University of British Columbia in 1998. After graduation, Trudeau was a math, French, humanities, and drama teacher for a few years. Justin made his first national appearance when he was 28 delivering the eulogy at his father’s funeral.

Trudeau’s family manages his investments because he is prohibited from trading stocks or making investments as Canada’s prime minister. What Is His Nature Of Work?

Trudeau graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University in 1994 and a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia in 1998. After graduating, Trudeau taught math, French, humanities, and drama in Vancouver for a while. As a teacher, Justin loved working with young people, a passion he still cherishes.

As the son of former Canadian Prime minister Pierre Trudeau, Justin was no stranger to politics, and his surname, Trudeau, provided him an advantage in the political sphere. Trudeau accepted the role of Chair of Katimavik, a Canadian Avalanche Foundation. Justin was a well-known environmental and youth advocate.

Justin provided a voice for the young generation and regularly held conferences and events where he inspired the Canadian youth. Trudeau was a charismatic speaker and taught young people the importance of participating as active Canadian citizens.

In the Montréal district of Papineau, Justin set out in 2007 to secure the Liberal Party’s candidacy. He was successful, and in 2008 he was elected. In 2011, Trudeau won re-election after enjoying success in his political career.

Justin was chosen as the Liberal Party’s leader in April 2013.

Building a nationwide movement that involved hundreds of thousands of progressive Canadians was a key component of the Trudeau campaign. Justin and his team devote countless hours to developing a strategy to increase job growth, stimulate the economy, and save the environment.

The Liberal Party also focused on the middle class, giving them a voice under Justin’s leadership.

On October 19, 2015, the Liberal Party won a majority of the seats in the national legislature in every province and territory. Justin Trudeau was sworn in as Canada’s prime minister on November 4, 2015. The Liberal Party, led by Trudeau, was reelected by Canadians on October 21, 2019, who was pleased with the direction the country was taking.

Being the leader of a country is no easy task, yet Justin Trudeau leads his government to work hard for the Canadian people. Some of Justin’s accomplishments include:

  • Creating middle-class jobs.
  • Promoting consumer affordability.
  • Safety for communities.
  • Fighting climate change.
  • Reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
  •  Appointing Canada’s first gender-balanced Cabinet.

Family And Wife?

The former prime minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife Margaret welcomed Justin Trudeau into the world on Christmas Day 1971. The first couple knew much of Justin’s life would be in the spotlight. When Justin was six years old, his mother left the house owing to reports of a scandal. While running the nation, Justin’s father, Pierre, raised him and his younger brothers alone.

Justin’s father, Pierre Trudeau, finished his first term as Canadian Prime Minister in 1979, and for the next few years, Pierre and his three boys could focus on the family. Justin felt relief as the focus gradually disappeared. Unfortunately, not for long! Pierre was reelected as Prime Minister from 1980 until 1984.

Although living in a broken home was challenging for the young future prime minister, being continuously watched by the public made it even harder. Another heartbreaking event befell the Trudeau family in 1998 when Justin’s youngest brother Michel was killed in an avalanche. Justin was inspired by Michel’s passing to advocate for avalanche safety.

Two years after Michel’s death in 2000, Pierre Trudeau, Justin’s father, passed away, and the 28-year-old Justin delivered a heartfelt eulogy that lunged him back into the national spotlight.

Justin And Sophie

In 2003 Justin reconnected with Sophie Grégoire, a friend of his brother Michel whom he had known since childhood. Sophie was a Quebec television personality assigned Justin’s co-host at a ball.

Justin and Sophie started dating a few months later and announced their engagement in October 2004. Seven months later May 28, 2005, the couple married at Montreal’s Sainte-Madeleine d’Outremont Church. Justin and Sophie have two boys, Xavier and Hadrien, and a girl Ella-Grace.

After leaving the television industry, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau devotes most of her time to charitable causes and social work, particularly those on the environment, women, and children.

Personal Issues?

Being the Prime minister of Canada leaves a lot of room for scandals, and the Trudeau family quickly realized that being in the spotlight all day can reveal many embarrassing moments. Some of Justin’s issues became the focus of many tabloid headlines.

Cultural Appropriation (Indian)

In February 2018, Justin Trudeau, his wife, and their three children traveled to India. For the Trudeau family, this was a time to connect with the Indian people and their colorful culture.

During Justin and his family’s trip to India, the world saw a different side of the young Canadian Prime minister. Trudeau, his wife Sophie, and their children went full-on Bollywood with their attire.

Justin made himself the laughing stock and the amusement of Indian officials and a leading Indian representative Omar Abdullah. Omar wrote, “Is it just me or is this choreographed cuteness all just a bit much now? Also, FYI we Indians do not dress like this every day sir, not even in Bollywood.”

The news media had a frenzy with the numerous photos that spread worldwide like wildfire. One of India’s biggest English magazines, Outlook India’s headline read, “Trudeau Family’s Attire Too Flashy Even For An Indian?” Trudeau returned home with Canadians outraged at his poor judgment and embarrassing behavior.

The world media slammed Justin for dressing up like a Bollywood actor.

Matters worsened for the Trudeau family when a photo was taken of Sophie Trudeau and a man called Jaspal Atwal. Sophie was photographed standing together at a function in Mumbai with Atwal, who was convicted of attempted murder in 1986. The media shared the Canadian’s concern about their meeting and how Jaspal Atwal found himself at the reception.

Blackface Scandal

When you are a country leader, even the past will come back to haunt you, something Justin Trudeau found out on September 18, 2019.

Time magazine acquired a  photograph of Trudeau with his face, neck, and hands painted brown, wearing a turban and robes. The photograph was taken of the 30-year-old Trudeau at a themed gala called “Arabian Nights” in the spring of 2001. The picture was published in the West Point Grey Academy yearbook from 2000–2001, where Trudeau taught.

Canadian and international media quickly spread the photograph portraying Trudeau as a racist, and the world once again lashed out at the young Prime Minister. After the picture was released, Justin apologized to reporters, saying, “I shouldn’t have done that. I should have known better, and I didn’t. I’m really sorry.”

Reporters pushed back after his apology asking if he thought the picture was racist, to which Trudeau replied, “Yes, it was. I didn’t consider it racist at the time, but now we know better.”

While speaking to reporters about the black face picture, Trudeau took the opportunity to avoid another potential scandal. Trudeau confessed to another time in his youth when he wore blackface makeup. Justin told reporters how he appeared on a talent show in high school with a black painted face singing “Day-O.”

As soon as Justin Trudeau made his latest confession, the media, and Global News swooped in and got their hands on the footage from the early 1990s. In the video, a young Justin is seen making expressions and lifting his hands while laughing while wearing black makeup.

Groping Allegation

2018 was a bad year for Prime Minister Trudeau. First, he was mocked for wearing traditional Indian garb when he and his family visited the country, and then the groping incident.

A news article from 2000 surfaced where a reporter claimed that 28-year-old Justin Trudeau groped a female reporter at the Kokanee Summit in Creston he attended for a fundraiser.

CBC reached out to the female reporter in 2018 to confirm the allegations.

The woman confirmed the incident saying, “The incident referred to in the editorial did occur, as reported. Mr. Trudeau did apologize the next day. I did not pursue the incident at the time and will not be pursuing the incident further. I had had no subsequent contact with Mr. Trudeau before or after he became Prime Minister.”

Although it was many years ago, Trudeau apologized and responded to the press by saying, “Over the past weeks, since this news resurfaced, I’ve been reflecting, we’ve all been reflecting, on past behaviors.”

Trudeau continued saying, “And as I’ve said, I’m confident I didn’t act inappropriately, but I think the essence of this is people can experience interactions differently, and part of the lesson we need to learn in this moment of collective awakening … people in many cases, women, experience interactions in professional contexts and other contexts differently than men.”

Career Issues?

Every administration’s opposition serves as a check and balance to prevent one party from going too far. The opposition occasionally uncovers improper behavior, but things should never get physical. Confrontations and professional problems have not been scarce throughout Trudeau’s tenure.

Elbowgate Incident

Parliament is known to produce some heated arguments but nothing as explosive as the “Elbowgate” incident.

On May 18, 2016, Trudeau made physical contact with two members of the opposition Party during a House of Commons session in parliament.

Trudeau accidentally elbowed Ruth Ellen Brosseau, a member of the New Democrats, in the chest after grabbing Conservative MP Gord Brown by the arm. Following his apology, Trudeau avoided legislative repercussions for the incident.

Aga Khan

In Canadian history, Justin Trudeau is the first sitting prime minister to violate the Conflict-of-Interest Act. In January 2017, ethics commissioner Mary Dawson investigated allegations that Trudeau and his family spent the holidays in the Bahamas on a private island belonging to Aga Khan IV.

Trudeau was found guilty of violating the Conflict-of-Interest Act, and the investigation focused on three primary concerns:

  • The Aga Khan Foundation is a registered lobbyist of the Canadian government.
  • Trudeau took a trip in Aga Khan’s private helicopter.
  • The federal government has given the Aga Khan Foundation millions of dollars.

SNC-Lavalin Affair

A company with ties to the liberal Party, SNC-Lavalin, was accused of paying off Libyan government officials. SNC-Lavalin appealed for a Deferred Prosecution Agreement to escape prosecution. The Public Prosecution Office of Canada refused and pushed that they go to trial.

Trudeau was implicated when the political scandal erupted. Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion showed that Trudeau, in conjunction with the Prime Minister’s Office, influenced Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould to provide a deferred prosecution agreement. Wilson-Raybould was accused of meddling in a court proceeding and resigned.

WE Charity Investigation

A $912 million state contract given to WE Charity in 2020 to manage a Canadian Student Summer Grant program had Trudeau in the headlines once again. WE charity was shown to have paid members of Trudeau’s family to attend its events.

The parliamentary committee heard testimony that WE Charity paid Trudeau’s family $425,000, including expenses, showing that WE Charity featured images of Trudeau’s family as celebrity endorsements. According to Trudeau, WE were qualified to manage the initiative as “the only conceivable alternative,” and the civil service, not him, made the decision.

The parliamentary committee confirmed that WE charity paid Trudeau’s family. The investigation confirmed that Margaret earned $250,000 for 28 speeches and Trudeau’s brother Alexandre $32,000 for 8 speeches. Grégoire Trudeau, who presented a webcast for WE, received no compensation but was paid for her travel costs.

Illegal Casino Scandal

In October 2020, Trudeau again came under fire when news broke of him allegedly being involved and associating with illegal casino magnets.

The National Post stated that a 52-year-old estate developer in Toronto, Wei Wei, was charged with running an illegal high-end Toronto gambling ring. Reports showed that Wei Wei moved amongst high-level political circles advocating for Chinese interests and met Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on two occasions in 2016.

Trudeau’s opposition pressed him on the matter, especially after they found evidence that a delegation member gave the Trudeau Foundation $1 million. To create even more suspicion, members of that delegation also paid for a statue of Justin’s father, Pierre Trudeau.

Trudeau only responded by saying, “We have always followed all the rules around fundraising and will continue to, but we actually went above and beyond that in making sure all of our fundraisers are done in public spaces, and we invite the media to it and publish the list of people who attend.”

Since the illegal casino magnate scandal, the Canadian government reformed fundraising rules for the Liberal party.

Books Written By Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau wrote two books “Common Ground” that tells his live story growing up under the spotlight and the other ” Pierre: Colleagues and Friends Talk about the Trudeau They Knew” about his father and the impact he had as Prime Minister.

Common Ground

Trudeau’s bestseller Common Ground reveals insight into a young Justin, eldest son to then Prime minister Pierre Trudeau and how growing up shaped his ideals. Common Ground details his childhood, unknown to the public, and that Justin believes made him the man he is today.

In his book, Trudeau talks about his parent’s break up, the loss of his youngest brother, and the day his father passed. Common Ground takes the reader on a journey into Justin’s past as a  young boy, from his time as a teacher to his political career.

Justin reveals his love for Canada and how serving his country has always been something he aspires to. However, he did not want to follow in his father’s footsteps due to the negative publicity it attracted. This best seller is beautifully written and shows a side of Justin Trudeau few people know.

Pierre: Colleagues & Friends Talk About The Trudeau They Knew

Justin’s love for his father, Pierre Trudeau, is evident throughout this book. After three decades, Pierre still lives in the memories of friends, family, colleagues, and every Canadian. Since he died in 2000, his impact on Canada is still visible on almost every corner and every street.

Nancy Southam, a close friend of the Trudeau family, collected over 150 memories and stories from all over, and it is shared in Trudeau’s book ” Pierre: Colleagues and Friends Talk about the Trudeau They Knew.” Beautiful stories are in his book of a loving father, a strong leader, and a passionate politician.

There are many surprises, like his relationship with Barbra Streisand and political conversations with other world leaders. Justin’s book, ” Pierre: Colleagues and Friends Talk about the Trudeau They Knew,” pays homage to a great man with more accomplishments than there are pages to write it on.
